GUNSMITH SERVICES
|
Welcome to the PONTOTOC AMERICAN ARMS Services information
page. We're here to provide quality products and gunsmithing
services. Honesty is our policy and customer satisfaction is our
goal. No two jobs are exactly alike, because no two guns are
exactly alike, due to variations in wear and tear, level of
maintenance performed by the owner, etc., so it's often difficult
to quote an exact price until the work is done. But we know
what's out in the market, and what's being charged, and we are well
within the realm of reasonable when it comes to pricing.
Generally speaking, the more business you do with us, the more
value you'll receive for your hard-earned dollar. We have a
growing list of repeat customers, who apparently like what we have
to offer. We want people like that to keep coming back, so we
look for ways to show our appreciation.
We strive to maintain the highest standards of quality and
precision, and our gunsmith is one of the best in the
business. He is a compulsive perfectionist and always strives for
the absolute best in whatever he does, whether it's on your gun or
one of his own. No job is finished until the boss says it's
finished. If we're not satisfied with it we don't expect you
to be satisfied with it. We want you, our valued customer,
to be happy with whatever products or services you get from us.
Here is a representative price list of our services. It is by
no means complete, and is in the process of being updated, but will
give you some idea of what you're getting into when you order work
done. Many of our customers have never dealt with a gunsmith
service before, and really don't know what to expect, or how much
it costs, or how long it will take, or even if it can be
done. Please don't be bashful about asking questions.
Educating our customers is just part of the service.

NEW GUN SERVICE---many people don't realize that a brand new gun
needs to be serviced before it is fired. At the very least,
the chamber and bore should be wiped out. The factories are
producing some of the finest firearms ever, but unfortunately they
are not really "finished." That is, there is grease where it
does not need to be, burrs, both wood and metal, that can interfere
with the smooth and proper function of the weapon, too much or too
little oil, and that in the wrong places.
|
|
This service involves a simple cleaning and inspection to make sure the gun is ready to shoot. Screws are checked for proper tightness. Rifle stocks are removed and checked for wood shavings in the barrel channel, or bumps of stock finish bearing against the barrel, which can affect accuracy. This would be a good time to adjust the trigger, which is often less than what it could be as it comes from the factory. The sights, and/or the scope could be checked with a boresighter, and checked for proper tightness. All these little details vary, depending on the type of firearm.
Price for this service starts at about $35.00 , which is our minimum gunsmithing charge. |

GENERAL SERVICE INSPECTION (g.s.i.)
|
|
This is a service we perform probably more than any other we offer, and find that it can cure many ills. Over time powder residue and other contaminants build up in places not seen during normal cleaning, and gun oil dries out and becomes like varnish, very much like that seen on a car's carburater. All this crud can have an adverse affect on safety, accuracy and reliability. This service entails complete disassembly, cleaning and inspection of all parts for wear and tear, reassemble with proper lubrication, function check and test fire. Some small springs and missing or damaged screws may also be replaced, and sights checked for damage and allignment. Scopes get remounted, with the scope and all ring and base parts and screws cleaned and then boresighted. (There is an additional charge for actual sighting in.) Our gunsmith can't resist doing a little smoothing, polishing and deburring, and touching up the bluing, so after receiving this service your gun will generally perform more smoothly and reliably, and look a lot better. The customer will be notified of any major work needed. The price for this service varies by model and condition, and does not include any parts that may need to be replaced. *For example, a Remington 742/7400 would be about $200.00. *A Marlin or Winchester lever action would be about the same. |

STOCK REFINISHING
|
|
To remove the old finish, or what's left of it, sand down wood
surface, smooth up with fine steel wool and apply at least three
coats of TruOil starts at around $100.00. That's for either a
one piece or a two piece stock. That tough epoxy stuff like
on some of the Brownings requires a special stripper and of course
will be more costly. Cost to recut the checkering depends on
the complexity of the design and the extent of any damage.
Our gunsmith does this the old-fashioned way---by hand.
